Eeeeeeew, Worms!

Ever heard of vermiculture? I read about it last year, and, though I thought it sounded pretty neat and all, I never thought I would actually try to do it. Who wants worms in their kitchen? Then, a few months ago I came across a short step-by-step video about it. It looked so easy and I thought it would be a great project for my kids (especially my son) and me. And, if my worms survive, I'm sure my poor garden will thank me. Here are my kids having a great time tearing up newspaper for the worm's "house."

The kids watched the video with me and we counted down the days to the worms arrival. Our 1000 red wigglers came in this sack and looked pretty sorry -- skinny and hardly moving. So, Alyssa gave them a drink with her spray bottle and lightly wetted down their bedding.

Payton dumped the worms in, then pulled out the ones that seemed stuck in the bag. What a BIG helper (I didn't want to touch 'em!). At this point, the kids nearly had their faces down in with the worms, so I decided it was time for another picture. "Cheese!" I ordered. They both picked up their heads with a smile! Then we fed the worms some kitchen scraps we had rotting on the kitchen counter for the past week -- yes, my husband "loved" that! (I am glad he at least went along with it.) Finally, we snapped on the lid that we had drilled holes in earlier in the week.

All ready! Now we just feed them kitchen scraps and wait. Hopefully, we'll have some amazing compost in time for planting.

Best of all, my kids really enjoyed this! We laughed and talked the whole way through it. And, we now include "worms" in our list of pets.
